  • What it is: The Charlotte Hornets are a professional basketball team based in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. The Hornets are a part of the Eastern Conference Southeast Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
  • Owner: Michael Jordan, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. He bought a large stake in the team, which he obtained in 2010.
  • Arena: The Hornets are based in Uptown Charlotte and perform their home games at the Spectrum Center.
  • The history:

The Hornets were founded in 1988 as an expansion franchise, with George Shinn as the owner.

Shinn's franchise moved to New Orleans in 2002 and was renamed the New Orleans Hornets. The Charlotte Bobcats, which were considered a new expansion team at the time, were founded by the NBA in 2004.

The Bobcats changed its name again to the Charlotte Hornets in 2014, and the team received the official history and records of the original Hornets (from 1988 to 2002) from New Orleans' team.

Not very impressive achievements

The early seasons showed disappointing records until 1992 when they finished their fifth season with a 44–38 record, they had their first-ever winning season and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Yet, they were defeated by the New York Knicks, thus being eliminated in the second round in five games.

They've made the playoffs a total of ten times in their 30 seasons since then. The Charlotte Hornets last made the playoffs in 2016, losing in the first round of the Eastern Conference.

The Hornets have never made it to the NBA Finals. The only times they came close to winning a championship were in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 1993, 1998, 2001, and 2002.

Their most recent season was in 2020 when they failed to progress to the playoff.
